Who Is Eligible for Social Security Survivor Benefits?
In order for a spouse or child to be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits, they must meet certain conditions. First and foremost, your deceased loved one must have worked long enough to be eligible for Social Security benefits.
Widows/Widowers: If you are a widow or widower, you are eligible for your spouse's Social Security benefits if you are:
- Retirement age (full benefits) or 60 years old (reduced benefits)
- Disabled and at least 50 years old (reduced benefits)
- Any age and taking care of the deceased worker's child (under age 16 or disabled)
If you are the divorced spouse of the deceased, you can still get benefits, so long as your marriage lasted 10 years or more and you meet the above conditions.
