Tips to Successfully Work With Your Doctor

There are many ways that you can improve your chances of obtaining Disability Insurance Benefits (SSDIB). One such way is to effectively communicate with all of your doctors, your chiropractor and any other physical or mental health professional who is providing medical services on your behalf.

If you are applying for SSDIB, avoid these common errors:

  • Failing to tell your doctor about all of your conditions: You must speak with your doctor about any issues that are impacting you and which may serve as a basis for receiving SSDIB. If your back, neck and knees are hurting you, for example, do not forget to mention all three conditions every time you see your doctor. You should also politely ask your doctor to note all of your conditions in your records.
  • Forgetting that your statements could be used against you: If your doctor asks you how your back is doing and you say it feels better today, for example, your doctor may make a note in his or her records that your condition is improving. People often feel bad about complaining and want to be positive in their outlook, but you should be aware that your doctor’s notes could hurt you if you give the appearance that your problems are not serious or they have significantly improved.
  • Failing to continue with treatment: If you feel that treatment is not working, you may be inclined to stop pursuing treatment. For example, if you suffer from severe migraine headaches and the doctor has prescribed medications or other treatments that have not been effective, you might be inclined to stop seeing the doctor. However, failure to seek treatment could be seen as evidence that your condition has gotten better or is not that serious.
